This post reminds me of a quote from Augustine: "You made us for yourself O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you." I am more on the resltess side of things these days. Even as we wander in restlessness and sin, I don't accept the idea of separation from God. One of my favorite Bible verses: "Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus." Paul Tillich used the word "estrangement" to describe the effects of sin. It evokes the Buddhist notion that our suffering is a result of ignorance or lack of awareness. Tillich used the phrase "the ground of all being" to name God. Like you said, we are good creatures living in a good creation, sharing in ongoing communion with God, except we are too often unaware of this reality. A Jesuit once put it to me this way, "Jesus came to tell us that we are already saved." In that case, it's just a matter of waking up to the truth. I realize this messes with atonement, but I struggle with that idea as well.
